Desmoglein (DSG) 1 & 3 Antibody testing is a diagnostic test used to detect antibodies against desmoglein 1 and desmoglein 3 proteins. These antibodies are commonly associated with autoimmune blistering skin disorders known as pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus.
Pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus are two types of autoimmune diseases where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys desmogleins, which are proteins that play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of skin cells by forming strong adhesion between them.
The DSG 1 & 3 Antibody test helps in diagnosing these conditions by detecting the presence of antibodies against desmogleins in the patient’s blood. The test is especially helpful in differentiating between pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus since they have distinct autoantibody profiles.
