TORCH stands for Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex virus. The TORCH test is often used to identify the cause of preterm birth and abortion. It can also help doctors diagnose infections that can lead to congenital disabilities, delayed growth, and brain problems.

When a pregnant woman contracts a TORCH infection, the infection can spread through the blood to the unborn child. When a woman gets pregnant, a gynaecologist may screen her for TORCH components during her prenatal checkup. Pregnant women with symptoms of other diseases may also need further testing.

In general, there are two variations of torch profiles. These are Torch 8 and Torch 10. The numbers here reflect the number of tests.

These profiles are generally referred to as Torch panel/Torch Profile/Pregnancy Torch Test
