What Is Lactate Dehydrogenase Test?
Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme required during the process of turning sugar into energy. The LDH test looks for signs of damage to the body’s tissues. The LDH test check for the level of LDH in blood or other body fluid. High levels of LDH may point towards acute or chronic cell damage, but additional tests are also necessary to discover its cause.

What Does The Lactate Dehydrogenase(LDH) Test Result Mean?
The normal range for LDH in blood are:-
- In newborns: 160-450 units/L
- In infants: 100-250 units/L
- In children: 60-170 units/L
- In adults: 100-190 units/L
LDH levels that are lower than the normal range are not generally considered as a problem. Higher LDH levels may mean that the patient has an infection in the central nervous system. In these cases, the doctor may suggest more tests to point-out exactly where the damage is. These tests are ALT, AST or ALP tests.
Extremely high LDH level may indicate multiple organ failure.
