About Cytomegalo Virus IgM Test | CMV IgM
The short form for Cytomegalo Virus IgM Test is CMV IgM. It is also known as cytomegalovirus antibody. This test is performed to identify if a person has a cytomegalovirus infection or if you had this infection in the past. It is essential to know if a person is going to receive an organ transplant.
Cytomegalovirus can cause health problems in 3 situations:
- IN ADULTS: Infection can cause mononucleosis-type or flu-like illness. Symptoms for this condition are fever, chills, body aches, headaches and extreme fatigue.
- IN INFANTS: Infection can cause some severe developmental and physical problems in infants. It occurs during pregnancy when a woman is infected by the infection, and then it passes to her baby across the placenta. - IN THOSE WITH WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM: CMV can cause severe death and illness to those whose immune system is weak. It includes HIV/AIDS, a person who had an organ transplant, bone marrow transplant and people who are taking chemotherapy for cancer. A person who is already exposed to cytomegalovirus infection in the past may develop reactive the infection. Symptoms are inflammation in the retina, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, encephalitis.
There are different methods for detecting cytomegalovirus infection. The test method will depend upon the age, health status and symptoms. IgM antibodies are produced at first by the body in response to cytomegalovirus infection.
