About Fructosamine Test

Fructosamine test is similar to the hemoglobin A1 test. Difference between these two tests is that the hemoglobin A1 test is used to measure average blood sugar level over the past 3 months while the fructosamine test is used to measure average blood glucose level. Fructosamine blood test measures glycated protein while A1 test measures glycated hemoglobin. It is also used in gestational diabetes. During pregnancy, changes take place very quickly. So, this test allows the doctor to monitor the blood glucose level. This test is also known as glycated serum protein.

Reliability of fructosamine can be compromised sometimes. Any affect in serum albumin production may affect the reliability of the fructosamine test.

Diseases caused by the change in the Fructosamine level:

  • Hepatic disease
  • Thyroid disease
  • Nephrotic disease
  • Paraproteinemia.

This test is primarily performed when a treatment plan for a diabetic patient is being started. It helps in monitoring the effect of diet, exercise, or medication. If the fructosamine level is higher, the average blood glucose level is also higher.

Instances where Fructosamine is considered over A1:

  • Diabetic pregnancy.
  • An abnormal form of hemoglobin.
  • Rapid changes in diabetes treatment.
  • A shortened life span of RBC.
