What Is An Immunoglobin A (IgA) Test?

An IgA test estimates the blood level of immunoglobulin A, most common antibodies in the body. The immune system produces the antibodies(proteins) to battle bacteria, infections, and toxins. IgA is present in high concentrations in the body’s mucous films, especially the respiratory passages and gastrointestinal tract, as well as in salivation and tears. IgA also plays a role in unfavourable responses. IgA levels also might be high in autoimmune conditions, issue in which the body mistakenly makes antibodies against healthy tissues.
Immunoglobulin An (IgA) compensates for 15% of circulating antibodies. However, secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) is by far the most prevalent in mucous secretions of the oesophagus, digestive organs, salivary glands, and tear ducts. IgA binds away remote issue before it even achieves the mucous cells to cause any damage. The mass of remote problem is then sloughed away, coughed up, or cried out.

Need Of An Immunoglobulin A Test

An individual may need this test if the specialist thinks that the immunoglobulin levels might be too low or too high.

Symptoms of too low levels include:

  • Frequent or unusual bacterial or viral infections.
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Lung infections
  • A family history of immunodeficiency.

An IgA test can help specialists determine issues with the immune system, digestion tracts, and kidneys. It might be done in children who have repetitive infections. It’s additionally used to assess immune system conditions, for example, rheumatoid joint pain, lupus, and celiac disease. Children born with low amounts of IgA — or none at all— are at elevated risk of building up an immune system condition, diseases, asthma, and allergies.

IGA Test Preparation

The doctor will tell the patient if any special preparations are required before this test. On the day of the test, having the child wear a T-shirt or short-sleeved shirt can make things easier for the child and the sample collector who will be drawing the blood.

High Level Of IgA Test

A high level of IgA test may indicate:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Lymphoma
  • Chronic infections
  • Cirrhosis of liver
Low Level Of IgA Test

A low level of IgA blood test may indicate:

  • Malabsorption
  • Acquired immunodeficiency
  • Hereditary telangiectasia
  • Gastric carcinoma
