Sex hormone binding globulin is a protein, produced by the liver. SHBG binds two sex hormones, i.e., Androgen and Estrogen. This protein is found in both male and female. It is also responsible for transporting hormone to other organs of the body. Sex hormone binding globulin test is used to evaluate low testosterone in males and evaluation of the excessive amount of androgens in females. In males, a high level of testosterone can cause early puberty, adrenal tumours, etc. In females, it can cause an ovarian tumour, congenital adrenocortical hyperplasia.
